DR. GUPTA: Hi I’m Doctor Gupta. I’m the President and CEO of Planet GPA. We are doing these videos because there are international students from all over the world who are very interested in studying in the U.S. particularly for M.S. programs or Masters Program.
To the United States, we have about 700 000 students from all over the world who come to study in the United States and of this 700 000 approximately 70% are looking to study in a masters program. The institutions in the U.S., colleges and universities in the U.S. are world famous for their M.S. or Masters program.
And the masters programs run the gamut from engineering, business, environment, health sciences, pharmacy. A whole range of programs the Psychology, English, Literature, Education, all of them. So how does one select the right university? This is the key question for every student because this is an extremely important decision. If you select the wrong university, it certainly will affect your educational experience but also your career, dreams, goals and aspirations. So this is a very important decision, a very critical decision. In fact, I think that this is one of the most important decisions you will be making and therefore it is important to gather a lot of valuable information about it.
So when you’re looking for universities that offer M.S. certainly you need to do some research to identify those universities that offer programs in your discipline. But there are hundreds of universities that maybe offering courses or programs, a masters program in your discipline.
For example, if you take a masters in electrical engineering, there are probably close to 300, 400 universities that offer a masters in electrical engineering. And out of those 300 or 400, you’re trying to select the university that is best for you. So I’d like you to take into account not only what the university has to offer but also who you are and what your goals are.
So some of the things you want to look at in the university is: What are their research programs? What are their faculty profiles? Certainly what is the cost of attending this institution? Is it a large university or a small university? Is it in a city or is it in a rural area? What kinds of companies come to recruit at these universities? Do they have an assistantship? Do they have an internship? So these are all very critical questions that you as a student must ask and find the answers too.
